Sherlock Update: What Moriarty Did Next

It probably won't come as a surprise that I loved the BBC's new Sherlock mini-series.

To my mind, Sherlock had everything a good TV show should have. Fab scripts, nice twists, beautifully shot, wonderfully acted.

And, as m@ londonist has pointed out, it was saturated with shots of sexy London. OK, so the second episode of the trio was significantly weaker in my opinion, but I'm willing to overlook that for the classy quality of the rest. The third episode fight scene alone was a terrific piece of TV: it had me holding my breath in wonder...

So, too, did the the arrival of Moriarty. I was paused, waiting for a quiet moment to start breathing again. Here, to my mind, was an unknown, although clearly terrifically talented, actor chewing up the scenery like he'd been born to do it. (His performance soon disipated my all my initial disappointment that Moriarty wasn't a woman.) It was quite a surprise. I suppose I was expecting Moriarty to be played by someone as familiar to me as Sherlock, Watson, Mrs Hudson and Lestrade are.

Turns out, of course, that he's been around for a while. Of course. Andrew Scott was even credited in Saving Private Ryan. And he's been winning awards left, right and centre in London's theatres for a while now.

Researching the upcoming Design For Living at the Old Vic, I came upon this:

Rather pleasing, don't you think?

  5. What? What? I'm in Canada and just watched the last episode. I absolutely love this series, particularly the two leads and Lastrad. But surely there will be an episode 4, correct? That cliff hanger has me climbing the walls!

  6. Oh my god i just bought the dvd and watched in utter amazement at the sheer genius of Steven Moffat and co. I knew i was in for a treat when i noticed the name Steven Moffat the brilliance behind doctor who on the box. Being a female in my late 20's i missed the whole doctor who phenomenom the first time round but being the mother on a very obsessed boy i fell in love with the brilliance of the writting in it and soon became a who fan. I did however have a background of liking Sherlock and his weird ways facinated me. Not knowing about this series whilst it was on TV i came accross the DVD tempted by Sherlock sold by Steven Moffat and neither failed to dissapoint. I wasn't sure that this could cross cultures to modern times very well but has done so, so beautifully you don't even notice. The actors were made for these parts a suprise in the form of Martin Freeman as Doctor Watson who is amazing in this role and don't even get me started on Benidict cumberbatch, an actor i have never came accross before but plays Sherlock as if he were born to do so. The clif hanger at the end is just too much to bare so please i beg of you bbc return this series to my screen and put me out my misery.

  7. Season 2 can't come soon enough.

Brilliantly adapted & perfect character adaption (I adore both Sherlock & Watson).

I'm certain even Doyle would be impressed with this program. :)

  8. Never have I yelled "No!" at a television screen so loudly as tonight with Sherlock aiming his pistol at the bomb by the pool. What? Ended like that? "Say it ain't so," somebody, please. Phenomenal three programs, excellent acting, slowly developing characters.

Being from the Left Coast of the US and having listened to too much to too loud rock'n'roll in the 60s, I needed to record and watch a second time to catch all the dialogue. Second time through, though, gave me a much better appreciation of the story line. (Of course, I didn't watch the last 15 minutes twice, but I did have to play back several lines to hear all the clever and telling details. Bravo!

  9. I will not be able to wait for the fourth episode! This definately is my new favorite television series.

  10. Brilliant show, brilliant casting and brilliant writing. I have been on the edge of my seat each time I watched. Here in the states we just finished with the third episode. I have already gone back and watched the first two again. I can hardly wait for the next one. It makes me miss London. I'm ready to come back.

  11. Brilliant series! I think this may be my favorite iteration of Holmes and Watson yet. Clever to use a loaded gun aimed at a bomb by a pool for the showdown, instead of a boring old waterfall.

But I see problems ahead...Martin Freeman is soon to become Bilbo Baggins! We may have to wait an ungodly amount of time for the 4th installlment.

  13. I grew up reading the Sherlock stories and I pretty much read them year round as an adult now. I'm a fan of this show because it's done so well on all levels. It adds a new youthful energy while interpreting the classic Sherlock cases very well. It's accurate in terms of setting and detail and reinforced by strong believable acting. The modernization is done extremely well. This show deserves to become a long-standing series!

When are we to see the next eposode? This is just too cruel. I had no idea they were going to hang us dry like that, didn't even know that was the last episode. Cliffhangers are great and all that but this is just too outrageous! Just how long are we meant to wait? At least tell us when the torture will end!

  15. I loved the series in its entirety, but I must say that Andrew Scott's Moriarty was the standout bit for me.

(To the point where I've got a tad bit of a crush. Well, I say tad. But to crush on Moriarty is surely not good. Right?)

Anyway bravo boys, everyone involved, et al, and thank you sir may I have another?

  16. So when will We be able to watch Season Two and Three and on and on... Finally, my husband and I found a series again that We love watching and it turns out to be a Trilogy only, up to this point! More, We want more!!! This is our date night We're talking about!!! We are in Ohio and watched it on PBS / WOSU and even our local library has the complete Season One DVD. Please make more and make it available to us too!

  17. I agree with curtine, the cliffhanger is too much to bear! I sat with my mouth wide open, unable to believe the episode had ended. I'm absolutely in love with the series, and shiver at the thought of waiting so long for resolution. How brilliant and cruel of Moffat and Gatiss!

  18. I love all the sly gay references! So smart to be that far ahead of your audience - or at least with them. This show is a joy.

Ok, I named one of my sons "Jeremy" after Mr. Brett and now that he is nearly 20 its too late to re-christen him Sebastian, but the performances on Sherlock are such an eclipsing meld of technology, the mind, and inspired acting that I am tempted. A show that tempts and pushes the audience's mind is a rarity. An excellent interpretation of ACD's original fiction. We all shouted "nooooo!" in those final seconds of the cliffhanger! When is more expected?

  20. I would like to say that this series is indeed a good attempt at bringing Sherlock into the modern world, however I find it slightly lacking. I may just be biased, but please take a look for yourself and compare (mind you, the subbing is not perfect, and this is the second part of the first episode) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX1QUTYtHsA&playnext=1&list=PL0E780484A19B34F0&index=1

there are other subs of this series by other people so you may be able to find an easier to understand one.
I do understand that the new Sherlock series is meant to accomplish different things than just retell the original stories in an engaging way for modern audiences, but it could still possibly use some cues from its predecessors.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Shush Mort! The series was hot! I too am a huge fan of Sherlock and I was wondering if this new adaptation would fly, and it did!

The character you are basing your opinion on is older and in an older time period so ofcourse there are going to be differences! But the writers did a marvelous job at orienting the brilliance and personality of Sherlock to a modern, younger audience. I'm 42, with a foot in both worlds of the new and old, and I say it's a hit.

  23. Finally got to see the third episode. I just want to say that I love that Moriarty is Irish. It seems to be a little known fact that it's the Anglicised version of the Irish surname Muircheartaig and most real Moriartys would be able to trace their ancestry back to the county Kerry. I wonder if Moffat and Gatiss knew this and deliberately set up Moriarty to be Irish at the outset. Can't wait for the next series (which I'll be able to watch first time 'round now that I'm back in England rather than living in Kerry with so many of my fellow Moriartys ;0) ).

  24. As a huge Doctor Who (as of remake 2005) fan, the new series of modernised Sherlock grabbed my attention immediately. I loved it from the very first five minutes. It is quite ridiculous, how much you can fall in love with a tv series, and in particular the characterisations.

Benedict Cumberbatch is just - magnificent! I've seen him in several things over the years, always thinking him good - but this? Beyond description, he is just so good.

Martin Freeman is also a complete revelation; such a brilliant portrayal and he makes Watson entirely fascinating.

The repartee between them is flawless; I love that you're always craving more dialogue between them, and the little gay jokes truly are hilarious. The complexities of the characters and how they interact, particularly where John feels disappointed by Sherlock's lack of caring at times, is just super. By the end of The Great Game, they so clearly care about each other, and even Sherlock is shaky at having seen John in such danger.

Why, oh why, did it have to end on a cliff hanger?? Ohh, I could have screamed at the television. In as good a way as possible, I've been in agony since.

I cannot recommend the DVD highly enough! Lots of extras, the crown of which comes in the totally different unaired pilot! It's like getting a fourth episode because so much of the sets and even dialogue is different! The scene in the restaurant between the two of them is actually - I feel - a bit *better* in the unaired version, because you get some funny extra information. John asks him if he's going to eat, Sherlock asks what day it is; John: Wednesday. Sherlock: I'm alright for a bit.

Anyway, series two can't start soon enough. Please hurry, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss! :-)

  25. I agree, the series can't continue quickly enough!

I too was disappointed that Moriarty wasn't a woman! Glad it wasn't just me!

I love this series, but I have one large problem with it, and perhaps some of you may share it:

While this is a wonderfully fun update of the classic novels, it remains incomplete--though Sherlock and his allies make use of modern gadgets, certainly more has changed since 1897 besides technology!

I can't help but wonder at the fact that, in the midst of all these updates, that the main cast remains white and male. In 1897 it made sense, but in 2010? It's just plain ridiculous. Why not make Watson a woman? Or Lestrade a black man? Or vice versa? Vary it a little, BBC!

Oh, and just a note: I hereby nominate the gorgeous and talented Aishwariya Rai for the role of Irene Adler in the next sweep of episodes.

  26. I despised the Sherlock Holmes movie that came out this year and could not bring myself to sit through it. I adore Sherlock Holmes stories and novels as well as Basil Rathbone's performance as Sherlock. When I got this BBC series as a Christmas present I was not looking forward to seeing it. How wrong my thoughts were! This is brilliant. The acting (especially by Sherlock) was fantastic. The dialogue was witty, especially for one familiar with the stories. It was just marvelous in all ways. I don't watch TV anymore. The writers now just put in lots of sex and violence to hide bad acting, unintelligent writing and mundane plots. This show however gives me hope for television. I hope they continue making the series, I would like to see a lot more of this.
BTW, mysterymeg, I think why this version works is that although modernized they did not change the characters much. Sorry a female Watson, coloured Lestrade just wouldn't work for me. That would be getting back to the problem with Sherlock the movie with Robert Downey, too many changes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Moffat and Gatiss leaving fans hanging like this after the third episode was every bit as cruel as Doyle killing Holmes off in the original stories. They better not wait for years, as Doyle did, to bring Holmes back to life!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Glad to see that someone else agrees that so much of TV is beneath the intelligence of the viewers. Thank God for Sherlock! It's given me something brilliant to watch. Love the actors -they were born to play these roles - especially Benedict Cumberbatch. Always loved the Sherlock Holmes stories & now the characters have been smartly transitioned into the 21st century. In agony waiting for the next season!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Just a few words for those on the edge of their seats after the end of the third episode...warning, a possible spoiler alert!! In episode one Sherlock Holmes (smarter) brother Mycroft said that the surveilance on Sherlock and Doctor Watson would be increased. It stands to reason that having all the resources of the Government at his disposal, he would know exactly where Sherlock and Watson were by use of cctv and other technological assets. GPS in their phones for example. I would wager that moriarty's henchmen get taken out by special forces. The bomb vest is obviously not "live". Moriarty knew that he would be talking to Sherlock face to face and the blast radius would kill him too. I'll wait and see! Cheers

  30. Wow Anonymous you sure do write alot. Unless you are several different people but the wording seems to sugest other wise. Anyway to what you had wrote I thought of that the moment I saw the last show and also while going through the "blogs" the way Serlock wrote the last one it could have been for both Moriarty and Mycroft that way they all know who the players are.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So I fell in love with this serreis when it first came on PBS. I wasn't a Holmes fan before, in fact the only other interpretation I had seen was the new movie, which whilst full of exlposions and actions, wasn't really true to the stories. Since watching the show I've read or listened to (gotta love audio books) most of orignial stories. I like the way they have modernized the elemets while keeping with how the short stories would have been seen when they were first produced. And, I can hardly wait for the next ones!

    ReplyDelete
  32. We are two very eager fans of Sherlock. The strange thing is, that is how we met (we are just friends!) And ever since then, we've have only talked about Sherlock. I think that ever since Sherlock had finished, a new generation have gone running to read the Conan Doyle novels and short stories.

We both think that Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are excellent people to cast as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. I hope that Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat hurry up with the Second Series, we both are dying to watch it in Autumn!! I am never goin to forget the day we had met and became best friends.

We are both 12 and we ADORE the show!

  33. I hadn't heard of this series until my sister gave me the DVD. I am guessing that it didn't get aired on BBC America since there is no mention of it on their site.

But my sister thought that I would love it and it was fantastic. I kind of rolled my eyes thinking it would be some dreary modern adaptation of a classic period piece, but I was dead wrong. I have gotten no work done at all today because I had to watch all of them.

I really hope that they decide to do more episodes. The writing is top notch, the direction and acting is fantastic. Hopefully there is enough audience to warrant more episodes.

  34. Edgar here-

I held my breath, and my suspense. It was so difficult not to watch them back to back to back. I knew, however, after the first 20 minutes of the first, I should savor... rather than consume them in a gluttonous feast.

It was indeed the right thing to do. Now I wait with unimaginable anticipation for their return. I live within sight of the Hollywood sign... but there is little competition from the local community. Even the "masters" are mere hacks compared to this. Bravo to all involved!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Anonymous that the bomb is a dud, and that Mycroft may be the deus ex machina hiding in the rafters. Did you also notice that Watson still has his gloves on and that he is positioned sitting on his heels? I am betting that there are more heroics in Watson's immediate future.

As for the cliffhanger ending, OMG, *where* is the resolution? Is must be "in the can" already. Anyone have access, or even a hint?

BBC, keep up the good work. It has been a joy watching your programs over the decades.

  36. Hi there...just a little bit of news. Season 2 will air in the UK around October. Filming is due to start in May. No clues on the storyline as yet, save for some cryptic info given by Steven Moffat to The Guardian newspaper - "You can have three words to work from: Adler, Hound, Reichenbach. Those are your clues."

  43. Here across the "pond," We Love All Things BBC! Brilliant!

Query: Why is there no credit in the Sherlock: Series 1 for actors playing Mycroft Holmes and no credit in Episode 3 for Moriarty? I stopped the streaming video on Netflix here in the USA and re-read each one, but no listing. Is this some "cult" thing, not to name Moriarty? As in, the thing whose name may not be said?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I absolutely LOVED Sherlock. Being an avid Doctor Who fan, I had high expectations for Sherlock when I heard it was created by the GENIUSES that are Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis. I can, literally, not wait until Sherlock comes back, and it must be comin some time soon because the first half of Doctor Who has now finished :(

    ReplyDelete
  45. By the way, it did say who played Mycroft and Moriarty. Mycroft was played by Mark Gatiss and Moriarty was played by Andrew Scott. And no, it is not a cult.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wait!!!!! Do you mean to tell me that there was only to be three of these and that's it!!!! I was ready to settle in for years if incredible television. I was at work here in Manhattan telling everyone about the show and I's say at least 20% knew of it already; and I'd hazard a guess that that isn't too shabby considering we're across the Atlantic Ocean.

Please come to your senses. These actors did a wonderful job bringing the characters of Holmes and Watson to life. Don't let it end!!!

  49. Creepiest. Moriarity. EVER. Just for a minute, because of all the gay jokes about Holmes' and Watson's relationship in the series, you ask yourself if "Jim" Moriarity is gay, straight, whatever ... and then you realize that he's something beyond all that mundane stuff. This is a guy who gets off watching snuff films of baby rabbits getting mutilated, because what really gets him excited is the sound of their tiny, agonized screams. The hairs on the back of my neck actually stood on end when we finally meet him at the swimming pool. The wait for the resolution of the cliffhanger is AGONIZING.

  50. all I can say is Thank Heavens I got to see these three as repeats this year, having missed them entirely first time around! Best Telly Ever - even though we do have Dr Who, and Torchwood, and The Apprentice. Still, I found myself shouting "NOOOOO!" at the ending, and even louder when it stated it will return to our screens next year. Too many exclamation marks. argh!

  51. yeah just see buffalo gal's last sentence. i cannot wait. strange as it may seem- i loved being curled up in the corner of the sofa hugging a pillow to my chest and barely breathing. amazingly written and wondefully portrayed-typical that this show should bring out such a review style type of writing in 15 year old girl!

  52. The new series of Sherlock cannot be waited for by my best friends and I. we've been waiting most of the year for a new series and nothing can be seen nor heard!!

I have been very Sherlock Holmes and stuck my nose in real good by searching for any news about the new series, and a few days ago, I found that my search has become great disappointment... I have found out that Series 2 of Sherlock will possibly arriving in the UK in early 2012. I'm upset to hear this, I am an avid Holmes fan and so are my best friends; Please Please PLEASE hurry up with Series 2 of Sherlock!

Does the bomb go off or does Sherlock shot it? we all have to wait and see...

  53. mysterymeg, I have a friend who had the same theory as you, thinking that Moriarty was a woman!
She spent ages watching and re-watching all the Sherlock episodes to help give clues to her theory. Unfortunately, the theory and hard work went down the pan by the Third bomb-strap victim in The Great Game (the old woman)by saying: 'His voice is so soft -'

I hope that Sherlock comes back soon!

    Can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Agree with you about the slight disappointment over the second episode - I can't remember who wrote it, but for me it just lacked the sharp snappy wit of episodes 1 and 3.

Being a lover of Sherlock Holmes, I was terrified that the new Holmes would be awful - a modern day, up-to-date and unrealistic 'cool guy'. But he isn't. He's perfectly Conan Doyle-ish, but unique and new.

I can't wait for the new series, though a bit gutted that there's such a long wait for it. Roll on May 2012 - to hell with the exams, I'll be up all night watching these!

  58. i'm only 14 year old minnesotan girl.i first got hooked on sherlock holmes when one of my friends compaired my screenplay to the story "the speckled band' and "the dieing dectective". i had read both storys to see what she was talking about an i loved it so much that i had read all the stors and novels in just under a week! i was realllllllly bored one day and was looking on netflix for some good sherlock holmes movies, haveing already seen the rathbone ones and hungry for more. there was this good billy wilder one and i was begining to like the genre more and more! then i wacehed this other one that was done the same year as the realy good robert downey jr one. in this one though, sherlock and watson run through the streets chasing a robot dinosaur created by mycroft to take over london. it was painful. i was begaining to think that the downey jr was the only good holmes out there, alive that is. then i found the best show in the entre world! i was very sceptical about bringing sherlock into the 21st century, i mean if a movie can have a robot dinosaur in the victorian era god knows what they'll make sherlock do in our time! but i was pleseantly speechless during the entire 3 episodes! i wacthed all of them back to back the night i discovered it! then went over to a friends house the night after, it was her first experence with sherlock holmes and now she's hooked! i remeber vividly when she saw the last minutes of the 3rd episode, her face was so pale and tense, and i laughed sooooo hard at her squel of terror when it was over! now we are both huuuuuuuuge lovers of sherlock holmes and benedict cumberbacth aka THE BEST ACTOR IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!

  60. Loved this programme ever so much! Never so much as raised a finger onto books like Sherlock Holmes, but accidentally coming across this programme when it was on repeat in the UK, my actual whole life has changed!

I think Benedict cumberbatch plays a superb role, every line is perfect! And Martin Freeman is spectacular, he portrays a character that is kind and gentle yet very clever!

I have never really been a fan of doctor who but my brother and parents watch it, and I have noticed that the (Mark Gatiss&Steven Moffat) storylines were spectacularly clever and very easy yet complex and caused an air of mystery and I know my brother gets excited every Saturday. This definitely comes through into 'Shelock' and I believe that is why 'Sherlock' is so successful, following in the Doctors footsteps!
